It is a historical-artistic architectural monument dating back to the 15th-16th century. And it is placed under the protection of the Superintendence for Artistic, Historical and Architectural Heritage of the Umbria Region.
Location
Deruta's origins remain somewhat obscure. Perugia is about 20km away as well as its airport. Fiumicino Airport (Rome) is about 185 km away.
Description
The Castle is mainly composed of three original architectural nuclei representing three historical periods:
Medieval (dating back to the twelfth century), traceable in the stone walls of great thickness (even over 2.5 meters) that flow into the large and mighty Lombard Tower (about 36 meters high, square in shape and divided into five levels).
Renaissance (dating back to the 15th-16th century) which is the main body of the Castle formed by its rounded Keep or Main Tower (divided into five levels) and joined to the main nucleus of the Castle proper.
Neo-Gothic (dating back to the nineteenth century) which represents that part of the building, joined to the Renaissance nucleus, which overlooks the inner village and which encloses the Belvedere Tower at its top.
The interiors consist of seven double suite-bedrooms with the possibility of a third bed, each with large bathrooms or salle de bain equipped with the most modern technologies such as whirlpool baths and showers with aroma-therapy, chromo-therapy, ozone-therapy, Turkish bath and radio. The Suites are called Contessa, Dama Bianca, Borgia, Gotica, Vergini, Torre degli Sposi, Cavaliere. The master apartments are on two floors and have 4 double bedrooms with the possibility of a third bed (each with an independent bathroom equipped as above) called Master Bedroom, Bishop's Room, Guest Bedroom, Lady-in-Waiting Apartment. In the Longobard Tower there are other double rooms on 4 levels called the Swan Room, the Lion Room, the Raven Room and the Templar's Chamber connected to each other by a spiral staircase. On the first level of the Longobard Tower there are 2 equipped bathrooms. In the Castle's Guesthouse there are two rooms (one double and one single) with a bathroom equipped for disabled use. Altogether there are eighteen bathrooms considering the service bathroom for the Museum Area (called the Grottino), the service bathroom for the Dining Room, the one called the Hanging Room of the Studiolo located in the Master Apartments and the service bathroom adjacent to the Knights' Hall. The property has three equipped kitchens: the Ancient Castle Kitchen (on the ground floor), the Master Kitchen (on the first floor of the master apartments), the kitchen of the small apartment of the Lady of the Company (on the second floor of the Master Apartments) On the ground floor there are numerous rooms and reception rooms, including large ones such as the Great Hall of the Armigers (over 100 square meters, the largest of the Castle), the Ancient Captains' Refectory, the Great Entrance to the Village and Renaissance Staircase, the painted Neo-Gothic Room, the Guard Room, the Weapons Room, the Passage Room and Grotto, the Ancient Gallery and main entrance of the Castle, the Gallery and Collections Room, the entrance corridor to the Park with the underlying medieval underground tunnels that lead to the Ancient Medieval Cistern that still exists, the Great Renaissance Dining Room, the Ancient Castle Kitchen and the Ancient Chapel. Connected to the Great Kitchen of the Castle, a large portico that can be closed with windows leads to the two covered rooms of the Cloister which in turn connect with the Lombard Tower and its aforementioned rooms. A wide stone staircase leads to the Noble Floor of the Castle and the suites of the Countess, Borgia, White Lady, Gothic and Virgins. From the suites of the Countess and Borgia there is access to a large square-shaped panoramic terrace overlooking the Ancient Cloister and the inner courtyard of the Castle. From the Longobard tower there is external access to the large external terraces of the Castle above the portico. From these, a daring staircase carved into the stone leads to the uncovered top of the Longobard Tower itself, which serves as a solarium…
