Piazza Armerina (Enna)

Strolling through the center of Piazza Armerina, I meet up with Luigi, my guide for the day. He has the air of a slightly melancholic actor, and his name seems to tie him—unknowingly—to one of the most famous fathers of Italian literature, who was born on this marvelous Mediterranean island. With a sly smile, he takes me to see the first property on my list: a fully renovated apartment, a modern and refined interpretation of a historic residence. The old building that houses it, located on the first floor, has been renovated on the first two levels: the ground floor, which now hosts commercial spaces, and the piano nobile, with an independent side entrance—that’s the one we’re about to visit. Luigi points out how the renovation was designed to gracefully welcome those seeking an atmosphere of class, while keeping intact the connection to local tradition and the soul of the place. The apartment, he tells me, has a long history of hospitality. Years ago, truck drivers would stop here after long journeys to refuel—the building had a gas station attached—and then spend the night in the rooms we’re about to see. With the same sly smile, he adds that more than resting their weary bodies, they were here to satisfy other needs. Only the silent walls know those stories now. Today, the rooms have been redesigned to become an exclusive bed & breakfast, made up of large, bright spaces, all furnished in a modern and refined style—never too much, always just right. We visit the common living area, which opens onto a picturesque view of the town. It’S a cozy space where color and natural light intertwine to offer moments of relaxation. We continue with the four bedrooms, each with a private bathroom. Every room features a brightly painted wall behind the bed—a sensory touch that gives each space its own unique identity. The rooms’ beauty is enhanced by barrel-vaulted ceilings, finished with Venetian stucco and masterfully lit to add a regal feel to every corner. Each room is equipped with air conditioning and private bathrooms, featuring spacious showers that invite guests to unwind. Two of the rooms open onto small balconies overlooking the piazza, where the town’s life flows slowly and calmly, always within sight of those who appreciate history and the city’s living breath. One of the rooms includes a beautiful corner whirlpool tub, large enough for two. I must say, the beauty of the old has been perfectly blended with the comfort and practicality of the new. I believe this property is an unmissable opportunity for anyone looking to not just purchase an apartment, but to own a piece of history—lovingly restored and ready to become a profitable business. What are you waiting for? These rooms whisper that they can’t wait to become the silent witnesses of many new stories waiting to unfold.

Calascibetta (Enna)
70 m²

Wandering around the Sicilian hinterland, it is not difficult to see large rural homes characterized by a construction closed to the outside and with all openings facing the courtyard. Those have noble origins and this can be seen from the presence of a part of the building for residential purposes on a high floor in which the owner once pleasantly stayed with his family during the Sicilian summer months. The prestige at the time was highlighted by the richness of the furniture, while the lower floors were intended for farmers and warehouses. The perimeter walls, without openings, had a defensive function, while a large entrance door, the only passage to and from the outside, also allowed carriages and transport wagons to access the courtyard. Our Baglio is also built in stone masonry in situ with common mortar with the roof made with a wooden load-bearing structure, with "scissors" trusses, exposed beams and slats. But before delving into the details of this ancient and splendid property, a pinch of history and geography to fully understand it. We are in Calascibetta, which, translating the two Arabic terms that make up the name, literally means castle on the summit, and precisely on Mount Xibet, on the border of the Val di Noto, in the heart of Sicily. One of the characteristics of this place is its strategic position, equidistant from the three seas that bathe the island and the uniqueness of this city is also found in its ancient external road system, partly still preserved today, made up of twelve royal Trazzere ( the term Trazzera means straight road) which started from the center of the city or its offshoots and were distributed radially, connecting it mainly with the three seas surrounding Sicily. Calascibetta boasts a notable archaeological, artistic and historical heritage which unfortunately is known to few, the finds discovered are scattered in various Sicilian museums, but the characteristic that distinguishes it is given by the presence of the "grotto" urban fabric, a rock city which is the built one is subsequently superimposed, hiding the first one from view. In fact, there are numerous caves and caverns, sometimes communicating with each other, dug into the rock, homes of a troglodyte civilization. Different peoples have succeeded one another here, but one can understand the standard of living of the past from the presence of a Giudecca anciently built outside the town centre, with a fervent Jewish community dedicated to trade, usury and craftsmanship. In this wonderful and important historical context is the Baglio or Bagghiu, called in Sicilian, which we propose today, a fortified farm, a typical expression of Sicilian feudalism. This architectural complex is set in a rural context now surrounded by uncultivated land but which in ancient times saw a panorama full of date palms, pines and cypresses while the voices of men and animal sounds resonated in the courtyards and courtyards. Let's enter the part of the property covered by the proposal by crossing the gate adorned with two stone pillars. We walk along the walls and around the corner, the main facade appears. On the ground floor we rediscover the ancient cellars and then access, passing through the internal courtyard, the stairs that take us to the first floor. The interior takes us back to the present day, the house has in fact been recovered by creating a large living area on the floor with kitchen on one side and living room on the other, a bedroom and bathroom while the spiral staircase placed in front of the The entrance leads us into the attic, a large open space with a second bathroom. Here, where the Sicilian nobles produced large quantities of cereals for the Spanish, why not revive these ancient and fascinating properties? Why not go back to enjoy these boundless horizons and breathtaking views? After the visit your imagination will begin to want to reuse it as an agritourism business, or as an accommodation facility or simply use it for residential purposes. The fact remains undeniable that you won't want to miss a sunset sitting under the pine tree enjoying the pine nuts produced in your Baglio.

Piazza Armerina (Enna)

Today we are going to Piazza Armerina, a municipality in central-eastern Sicily located in the Erei mountains at around 700 m above sea level. I must admit that I was unaware of the presence of this place and I thought it was a square in Enna and not a true natural and artistic masterpiece, known as "The city of Mosaics and the Norman Palio" or "The city of 100 churches" Our meeting is at the Duomo, the highest point in the city. From here a series of medieval streets unfold through which we wander in ecstasy, while to the right and left we are surrounded by Renaissance and Baroque buildings. A Vespa whizzing by a few steps away from us brings us back down to earth and understand that we are in the 21st century. Among these ancient buildings we identify the one where the property we are going to visit today is located, the result of a recent renovation where a large and modern apartment has been created on the first and second floors. Having crossed the threshold through an ancient and austere wooden door, an elegant staircase covered in Caltagirone marble and ceramics takes us to the first floor where the various rooms develop from the large atrium starting from the living room, the large living area with an American kitchen with a relaxation space and a splendid view where we can admire the famous Gagini balcony and finally a study room and bathroom in refined marble. The staircase that leads us to the sleeping area is another element that characterizes the entire house, marble and glass blend together in an extremely pleasant contrast between the classic and the modern. The second floor reflects the dimensions of the one below, but is different in layout and style the slope of the roof. Here we find the three rooms, one with a walk-in closet and the large bathroom finished in a more modern but no less beautiful way. What can I tell you, a few lines are not enough to describe in detail each environment and the characteristics of the materials and finishes, what we know is that if the center of Piazza Armerina is your destination your search will stop here.
