I've never been a comfortable vacation type. But this time I needed something different in my life. A refuge. So, pushed by a Sicilian friend, I ended up here, a few kilometers from Piazza Armerina, immersed in the rugged and beautiful countryside of the Sicilian hinterland.
The mansion had been described to me as “a dream of stone”, and when I walked through the iron gate, I realized it was no exaggeration. The house, ancient but completely renovated, seems to emerge from the earth itself. It is built with light stone from the Aidone mountains, handmade, alive under the sun.
As soon as I arrived, I was welcomed by a tidy and fragrant garden, with olive trees, ripe figs and smooth stone paths. But the heart of the outdoor space is undoubtedly the square barbecue: modern, elegant, with one side entirely dedicated to cooking pizzas. On the first evening, I lit a fire, mixed with local flour and baked my first pizza, watching the hills turn golden.
The villa opens with a bright ground floor: a modern kitchen, where light enters slices from the windows, blends with a functional living room furnished with a large modular sofa. That's where I spent my evenings, reading, music and silence. There is also a basic bathroom and a practical storage room, where I have placed my backpack and hiking shoes.
On the first floor, two bedrooms overlook small wrought-iron balconies, from which you can enjoy a different view every morning: light fog, sharp sun, wind in the leaves, and then... Silence. Here too, a modern and well-kept bathroom, with simple but elegant finishes.
The attic was a real surprise: a single large open space, naturally divided into two areas by a play of different heights. I chose the highest part to create a small photography studio, while in the lowest area I spread a carpet, placed pillows, books and a floor lamp. Exposed wooden beams are the only reference to tradition in an environment with an essential and contemporary taste.
The secluded location is what makes this place truly special. Piazza Armerina is just a few minutes away by bicycle. There I walked through baroque alleys, tasted freshly stuffed cannoli and visited the famous Villa Romana del Casale, with its breathtaking mosaics. But every time, I couldn't wait to return to these hot, silent stones.
When the sun goes down, the walls turn orange, and everything seems suspended.
This villa is a place where the ancient stays outside, carved in stone, while the modern welcomes you inside with style and simplicity. It is the perfect balance between history and present, between roots and freedom. A place that speaks to you, observes you, protects you.
Here, between stone and fire, I found something I had lost: time.

"Honey, you can't imagine how wonderful this is!"
My mother's voice is full of excitement, clear and alive on the other end of the phone.
"We arrived in Sicily this morning and now we are at Alessandra's house, on the hills that embrace Piazza Armerina. My love... I have no words. She lives in a villa that seems to have come out of a daydream! It is immersed in a sea of olive trees, which move slowly with the wind as if they were whispering ancient stories. The landscape is a continuous wonder: gentle hills that chase each other to the horizon, the intense scent of wild rosemary that mixes with the warm air, and that light... Oh, that golden light that here in Sicily seems to bless everything. On the clearest days, Alessandra told me that you can even see Etna, far away, but majestic.
The villa sits on a slightly sloping terrain, surrounded by silence and nature. When I saw it for the first time, I felt like I was entering a painting: an elegant but sincere house, welcoming like a hug.
On the ground floor there is a splendid covered patio, with wooden beams and a barbecue area that smells already of summer evenings, laughter and good wine. The kitchen, large and bright, is a little gem with windows wide open on the olive trees, every detail chosen with care. Next to it there is an intimate living room, furnished with simple but refined taste, the relaxation area with a large fireplace, a comfortable bathroom and Alessandra's bedroom overlooking the garden.
Going up one level - even if, given the slope of the land, it still seems like the ground floor - another living room opens up, with a large terrace overlooking the valley. It is my favorite corner: the sun comes in from every side and seems to caress your skin. Here there is a delightful guest room, where I will sleep these days with a bathroom just for me and the private terrace ideal for my tan. On the top floor, in the attic, there are two bedrooms in one went to Lucia and the other to Sandra and a really pretty bathroom.
Everything smells of lavender, wood and cleanliness. The windows overlook the olive trees, and in the evening... It is something that cannot be explained. You only feel the chirping of crickets and the wind in the leaves. No noise, just peace. A silence that enters you, and heals you. Alessandra is happy here, you can see it in her eyes, in her calm gestures, in her serene voice. Next time we have to come together, you and I. I want you to see all this, feel it too. This place steals your heart."

The car stops in front of a large gate. Mom smiles, pats her belly and says, “We're here.” I jump down, curious. Dad opens the gate and we stand in front of a large house, surrounded by greenery. A door that leads into a secret third floor, everything here is still in the rough, when I grow up Mom said there will be a room for me, one for my sister and three more to accommodate friends and relatives plus of course the bathroom, actually two.
Outside there is a barbecue area under the trees. Father promises that in the summer we will have barbecues with the grandparents, who will come to live with us during the vacations.
But the best thing is that I will finally have Spike. Father read in a newspaper about an abandoned Belgian shepherd. He said we will adopt him together. I will never leave him, Spike will be my best friend.
This is not just a home. It is a dream, here in Piazza Armerina, in the hills of Sicily. It is the place where we will grow up, together.
Born soon little sister Spike and I will need a companion for adventure.
