מיד גיליתי מדר stairs down to the basement. Following it out of curiosity, I found a large tavern. It is dark and cool, with a huge fireplace that still smells of burnt wood. I thought of winter nights, when snow covers the hills outside and warm drinks are served inside while stories are shared until midnight. A place for the gods of wine and friendship.
I went up to the ground floor. Here I found two immense halls, as large as temples, filled with windows that looked out over the hills and the plain. In one of these, at the center, there is a fogher – a low wide hearth, where bread could be baked and meat roasted for an entire tribe. I placed my hand on the stone. It was warm. Someone, perhaps just a few hours before, had lit the fire.
Further on I saw the kitchen. It is large, tidy, and next to it is a room with stone tubs and water channels: the laundry, where the women of the house once scrubbed the tunics and sang.
The most beautiful thing, however, I discovered coming out. From the kitchen and the stairs, there is access to a porch. I stopped at the threshold and I lost my breath. In front of me, the Euganean Hills unfolded like a fan, green and purple under the afternoon sun. Terraced vineyards, patches of cypress trees, distant villages perched on the peaks. I thought, "If Bacchus lives somewhere, it's here."
Going up to the first floor, I found the sleeping rooms. They are spacious, filled with light, each with its own bathroom and a small terrace facing south. I imagined lying on one of those beds, with the windows open and the scent of linden trees gently entering. I imagined the silence. Here, away from the noise of the Forum, far from the carts and the cries of the markets, a man could sleep as he has never slept.
I descended into the garden. I walked among the olive trees – there are dozens of them, all mine, if this villa were mine – and I filled the jar with water from a spring I found hidden among the rocks. Then I sat down. I drank. I watched the sun slowly descend behind the hills.
The festivities of Bacchus begin tonight. I should have climbed higher, where the bonfires are already lit and the sound of drums can be heard. But something holds me here, in this villa that has welcomed me like a son.
Perhaps Bacchus does not want me to dance among the crowd. Perhaps the gift the god wants to give me is something else.
Perhaps he is offering me a home.
Tomorrow I will decide. Tonight I will sleep under the porch, with the olive trees keeping watch and the Hills watching over me. And if tomorrow, upon awakening, the god speaks to me again, I will respond.
Because a man passes, the festivities end, but a villa like this – on these hills, with this garden, with this light – is forever.
